The Kilroy's Story

“Kilroy was here”, that famous phrase and image of a man peeking over a wall, is rumored to have been created by James J. Kilroy, a ship inspector at the Fare River Shipyard in Quincy, Massachusetts during World War 2. Mr. Kilroy began leaving the phrase and the image on ships that he had inspected in order to prove to his supervisors that he was doing his job and to prevent dishonest riveters from double counting their rivets and getting paid for work they had never done. The phrase and image caught on with GI’s who began to scrawl it wherever they went. (It is rumored to be scribbled a top Mount Everest, the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, France, the Marco Polo Bridge in China, and even in the dust on the Moon!)

For the past 20 years here at Kilroy’s we have stayed true to the James J. Kilroy legacy by “doing our job” honestly and leaving the “Kilroy’s mark of Quality” on every made from scratch order that leaves our dock.
